Our top tips to running a profitable business
Entrepreneurship, running your own biz and being your own boss…..sounds like a dream right? Anyone that’s in the game knows there’s a bit more to it. It takes determination and grit and the road to riches is not always smooth sailing. Read on for our tips to stay on top of the game!
Outsource like your life depends on it!
Or, if you have employees…delegate! Either way, using your valuable time on tasks that are outside of your wheelhouse is a complete waste of resources! Every minute you spend struggling through the parts of your business that are not your forte is time stolen from the really good stuff that actually helps your business grow. Whether it be admin, bookkeeping, payroll or marketing, always remember it's very unlikely you can do that task as well or in the same time frame as someone who has been doing it as a profession for years! Try to factor actual cost versus opportunity cost. What else could you be doing with that time that's better for your bottom line?
Back yourself and yell from the rooftops!
In order to survive and grow, your business needs customers. In order to get customers, you need to promote your business. In the good old days, this was a matter of deciding between a flyer, a brochure, a postcard, or an ad in the local newspaper. But as we all know, we now live in a digital world and while there are many user-friendly platforms out there, are you sure you’re using them to their full capabilities? And do you have a plan to ensure they’re all running seamlessly together? If you are a solo-prenuer, are you confident speaking about yourself and putting yourself out there? And most importantly (taking us back to point 1) do you have the time? If not; outsource it. Get a pro on the job. They will keep your brand up to date in the ever changing digital world.
Get support!
If you don’t have a mentor, you need one! There are so many resources out there. Reach out to people eager to help and who have been there and done that. Often the very best mentors offer emotional as well as strategic support. Sometimes all it takes is an outside pair of eyes to help you have those ah-huh! moments. What’s more, there is a lot to be said for accountability. A good mentor will offer incredible expertise and a heck of a lot of support but their job is not to be your friend; they are there to push you right outside of your comfort zone. That is the only place growth happens.
Go easy on yourself!
The grind of business ownership isn't easy. Otherwise everyone would be doing it. Remember to look after yourself. Yes, the business is likely your baby; don’t let it become your entire life. All this will result in is burnout and likely a loss of passion. Ensure you make time for your family, your friends and other things you love.
